With the construction of large-scale biogas pools and the increasing development of comprehensive biogas utilization, biogas power project emerges as a biogas utilization technology. The project applies biogas produced through anaerobic fermentation process to engines for electric power and heat output with the help of comprehensive power generation equipments. 

Biogas is a kind of widely-spread and cheap distributed energy source, whose power generation features creating energy efficiency, saving energy, safety, preserving environment and so on. The contents of those impurities like Si and H2S in biogas should be limited to a certain scope. The temperature of biogas is 10~60℃ and the pressure 0~5kPa. In general, biogas emerging from fermentation process of livestock manures can meet the requirements of gas quality, and biogas from waste water needs to be processed like desulfurization,while biogas from landfill needs to be dewatered.

Biogas main contents: CH4 55-65%, CO2 30-40% , and a little H2S, CO, H2, O2 and so on.
Biogas main characteristics (relative to natural gas):
A. The contents of biogas are not stable. Changes of such materials producing biogas as waste water’s contents, COD, manure can result in changes of contents and heat value of biogas within a certain range.
B. The pressure of biogas fluctuates. Generally, biogas is produced continuously. But affected by external conditions such as temperature, the pressure of biogas without a gas tank fluctuates to a certain extent.
C. Biogas contains such corrosive gases as H2S.


Biogas applications and significances:
A. Used for daily life of neighborhood residents. It has limitations for huge biogas tanks and long-distance gas pipelines are needed, thus contributing to high expenses and limited economic benefits.
B. Used on boilers to produce steam. When the biogas with methane content at 60%, 1m3 biogas can replace ~1 kg coal, but steam is a sort of energy with low value and biogas can be replaced by coal, so the economic benefits are comparatively lower.
C. Used for power generation. Biogas can be best capitalized to generate power which is high-quality energy. The comprehensive energy utilization rate of CHP can reach more than 80%. Besides, it is supported by State’s subsidy policies.

Biogas makes us use multiple fuels to shrink our reliance on a sole energy. As a comparatively clean energy, biogas can replace fossil fuels, which is an ideal way of reducing CO2 emission (methane’s greenhouse effect is 21 times as heavy as that of CO2). In some aspects, biogas power generation can offset operation costs, lower carbon emission and reduce the greenhouse effect.


Major processes of a biogas power project:

Biogas pretreatment system,the equipment to remove H2S, moisture and other impurities from biogas. there is also a blower installed to increase and regulate pressure.
The technologies includes dry way and wet way, the principle as following:
  -Dry way is to use dry media like Ferric Oxide to absorb the H2S and moisture,which is used if H2S content lower than 3000ppm.

  -Wet way is to use chemical solution to absorb the H2S and impurities,which is used if H2S content higher above 3000ppm.
